In my (unnecessarily long) response I pointed out that I disagreed with her on the origins of reason, but that, and that idea, isn't why I shared the post. I don't even think that her talk about the origins of reason and intellect are interesting: these are pretty typical Muslim intellectual thoughts. What I think is more interesting is her view on atheists, and in particular to how it clashes with so much of Western dogma. Until somewhat recently, Islam has been substantially more accepting of skepticism than (in particular) Christianity was, and I found phrases like "Some of the most ethical, moral people I know are atheists or agnostics" to be refreshing and positive - at least from an inter"faith" dialogue sort of thing.

It would probably be pretty great to abolish any sort of deism, but that is .. patently unrealistic.

Anyway: so there's this interesting thing that I think happens, particularly with atheists, and that is that a lot of us tend to believe what seems to be really stupid shit. Not that the stupid shit doesn't exist, or isn't rational or whatever, because it does and is. I imagine most of us are basing our worldviews from scientific perspectives, and I know that I certainly am, but for me personally, that means reading a the opinions of people way more educated than I am and slowly coming to a consensus. I don't /know/ that there are entangled quantum particles that respond to each other regardless of distance, because I a) can't do the math, and b) have no way of seeing these things, but I accept that they are true because there's a strong body of work supporting it.
